Eye strainĮye strain can occur after looking at and focusing on something for a long time without a break. Many times a laser procedure, called laser iridotomy, is also required. This is a medical emergency and requires treatments with eyedrops to open the angle, decrease the pressure, and decrease the inflammation. In this situation the pressure inside the eye can go up very quickly causing redness, pain, and nausea. Angle closure glaucomaĪngle closure glaucoma occurs when the drainage system within the eye is blocked. Unlike dry macular degeneration, this type can begin suddenly and progress rapidly. It causes blurriness and vision loss in the center part of your visual field.
Abnormal vessels may grow, causing blood and other fluid to leak into the macula. The center of your retina is called the macula. One of its symptoms can be blurred vision in one or both eyes. Transient ischemic attackĪ transient ischemic attack (TIA) is a stroke that lasts less than 24 hours. You may have other symptoms of a stroke, such as weakness on one side of your body or the inability to speak. A stroke involving your eye causes blurred or lost vision in only one eye. Strokeīlurry or lost vision in both eyes can occur when you have a stroke affecting the part of your brain that controls vision. Without emergency treatment, vision in that area may be permanently lost. When it happens, you see flashing lights and black flecks followed by an area of blurred or absent vision. Detached retinaĪ detached retina occurs when your retina tears away from the back of your eye and loses its blood and nerve supply. Some causes of sudden blurry vision are medical emergencies that must be treated as soon as possible to prevent permanent damage and vision loss. Or, as the pastor likes to think, it was divine intervention.Conditions needing immediate evaluation and treatment The excellent office staff, technicians, and OR team at Pepose Vision Institute made that possible. By 4:30 pm the surgery was successful, the retina was attached, and the patient was walking out the front door of the Pepose Vision Institute with an eye patch on.
Nevertheless, the patient was treated like a true emergency and was in the operating room by 3:15 pm. Now, the pastor’s vision was legal blindness. Holekamp was able to confirm the diagnosis, but unfortunately during the drive from Southern Illinois to Chesterfield the macula also became detached. The patient arrived at Pepose Vision Institute at 2:00 pm. She also called the operating room team to alert them to the situation.įortunately, Pepose Vision Institute has its own dedicated operating rooms and surgical team right in the Chesterfield building. Holekamp asked for the patient to come to Pepose Vision Institute immediately. Because retinal detachments can progress quickly, a macula-on retinal detachment is a true emergency. The term “macula-on” means that the center of the retina, the macula, is still attached and the patient can still see straight ahead. The optometrist diagnosed a macula-on retinal detachment. His pastor came to the office complaining of a 3-day history of floaters, flashes, and loss of peripheral vision.
